Authors Paul Yoon and Shannon Sanders Share Family Stories at Gaithersburg Book Festival

Loyalty Bookstore owner Hannah Oliver Depp moderated a discussion with authors Paul Yoon and Shannon Sanders at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 18. Both authors shared their collections of short stories inspired by their family experiences.

Yoon has authored four award-winning fiction books: “Once the Shore,” “Snow Hunters,” “The Mountain,” and “Run Me to Earth.”

He resides in the Hudson Valley, N.Y., and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship.

“The Hive and The Honey: Stories,” Yoon’s latest title, is a collection of unique stories. Each story confronts themes of identity, belonging, and the collision of cultures across countries and centuries.

Shannon Sanders, a Black attorney and writer, authored the linked short story collection “Company.”

Her short fiction won the PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers.

It has also been featured in publications like One Story, Sewanee Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, TriQuarterly, and more.

Sanders resides in Silver Spring with her husband and three sons.
